A Royal Wedding Tea – Viewing Party

A Word of Faith TABLESCAPES

On May 19, 2018, I was thrilled to host “A Royal Wedding Tea – Viewing Party,” in honor of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, an African American actress, as she married her Prince and became a member of the British royal family. They are now known as, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.  A childhood, fanciful, playtime dream come true.

With their love story played out before the world and all the pomp and circumstance of a British royal wedding, this significant moment in history wasn’t merely about the bond of love and marriage between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, alone. Their love story spoke volumes about the love of God, that transcends race, skin color, class, rank and file.

On a deeper level, from my perspective, it was “another application of healing” to the wounds inflected upon the African American psyche during the American institution of slavery when the hopes and dreams of our ancestors and their descendants ever rising to such a place of acceptance, dignity, worthiness, privilege or royal status was inconceivable or mutilated and stomped out. Therefore, the pride felt by many African Americans for Meghan Markle was deep, wide and reassuring.

Like President Barack Obama, the first African American president, Meghan Markle rose to a place where most us have never even imagined or dreamed. This historical event, no doubt, will change how some African Americans think and feel about themselves and inspire what we teach our children to believe about themselves.

Even though we know, now, that HRH Meghan, Duchess of Sussex is not the first person of African descent to become a member of the British royal family (Queen, Charlotte was the first). However, Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex is the first “African American” to become a member of the British royal family, and first Duchess of Sussex. WE really can “do all things through Christ, who strengthens us.”

As the world watched and listened, Bishop Michael Curry, who spoke at the royal wedding, was spot on in his message of the power of God’s love, the cure-all for all our worldly ills. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s marriage was a testament to the power of the love of God, where race, skin color, class, rank and file have no bearing. With God on their side, I believe they can weather any storm, conquer any battle that may cross their path and make a difference in this world. Keep the love of God, alive!!!
